Orthopaedic ailments

Children can have various orthopaedic complaints or conditions, by this is meant problems of the muscle, tendon and/or bone structures. Some problems are visible right from birth (e.g. certain deformities such as clubfoot) and other problems are only noticed later in development or during the growth spurt. We deal with the examination and treatment of a variety of childhood orthopaedic conditions from birth to adolescence. The spectrum of disorders seen is very broad and includes:

  • Congenital anomalies: clubfoot, hip dysplasia/ hip deformity, torticollis/ head tilt etc.
  • Fractures: Bone fractures usually due to trauma/accident
  • (Generalised) hypermobility and hyperlaxity: i.e. increased mobility/mobility of joints often in conjunction with (pain) symptoms
  • Infections and inflammatory joint disorders
  • Specific hip disorders: including Perthes disease, coxitis fugax, hip impingment, CAM, epiphysiolysis, groin pain, hamstring strain/tear
  • Specific knee conditions: including Jumpers knee, Osgood Schlatter, Patello-femoral pain syndrome (PFPS), Sinding Larsen Johansson syndrome
  • Specific foot/ankle conditions: including Morbus Sever
  • Specific hand/wrist/elbow/shoulder disorders: Little league shoulder, gymnastic wrist, gymnastic elbow
  • Growth disorders (leg length discrepancy, X-legs, O-legs, scoliosis, dwarfism)
  • Tumours, joint disorders
